Ya’ll, I am tired. This week has been a blur of family visiting from out of town, my husband starting a new job, a baby that doesn’t stop moving, and a ton of meetings with some crazy awesome clients. On weeks like this it’s nice to know that I get to work with some seriously admirable people who kick butt at life.
Thursday night and Friday night, Ryan Patrick gave his speech as the Distinguished Alumnus at John A. Logan College. He killed it. I may be a bit bias, but it may have been the best commencement speech in the history of commencement speeches. If I am being totally honest – I don’t even remember the commencement speech from my own college graduation. Ryan is one of the most humble and kind-hearted people that I know and if he tries to tell you otherwise (he will), I assure you that is not the case. I can’t think of a single person that deserves to be recognized for his general impressiveness more.

Stuff we wrote this past week:
On Tuesday, we shared one more of “Tim’s Greatest Hits” before debuting some stuff. What was it about? Starting new stuff. Coincidence? Yea probably, but if you could act like you think I know what I’m doing that would really do a lot for my ego.
On Wednesday, a reader asked, “How do you navigate around negativity?” So, with a little help from Tigger and Randy Pausch, Tim explained why avoiding negativity is so difficult but crucial to your own well-being. I think he may be on to something.
On Thursday, we addressed another excellent question from a reader: “How do we get away from using gimmicks like freebies and scarcities?” Short answer: it’s really really hard. A bit longer answer: it’s really really hard but if you can push through the initial discomfort, you will see some serious rewards.
On Friday, in Practically Social we shared…you know what? I don’t want to spoil it so you’re going to have to check it out for yourself.
Stuff we liked this week:
First, choosing the right font may just be one of the most stressful things about designing new material. So instead of biting off all your fingernails, take some of the pressure off by using IDEO’s font map.
Second, I’m not exactly sure how you accidentally create a new color, but some scientists did it. Now, Crayola is in quite a predicament.
Third, I don’t know about you but I am sick and tired of all this “good advice” circling around about eating healthy and dieting. Instead, I think I am going to follow John Daly’s advice. Cigarettes-popcorn-whiskey diet FTW.
Fourth, great news! You no longer have to stay up at night wondering if there are more dogs in New York named Beyoncé or Adele. There’s a database for that.
Fifth, in the midst of what has been a very wet spring, this baby gorilla is my spirit animal.
How can we help you?
Well, so that’s a start to our weekend and yours as well. We’ll grow this a little over time as we add content and think of other stuff. During the week, we’re primarily going to write about the five major levels of The First Order of Business, and we’ll share our best tips on management, marketing, and motivation.
In addition, we take requests. Please don’t hesitate to contact us if there’s a topic you’d like us to tackle.
Thanks for your time! Enjoy your weekend!
