Are you encouraging your employees or co-workers? Are you helping them grow and thrive or do you only give negative feedback when you catch them doing something wrong? We’ve all known both kinds of managers.
I think it was Ken Blanchard in The One Minute Manager who I first heard say, “Catch them doing something right.” It has since been claimed by so many others including The Disney Institute that you’ve probably heard it before but it bears repeating.
Apparently there was a sign in Lee Iaccoca’s office when he ran Chrysler,
“We live by encouragement; we die without it, slowly, sadly and angrily.”
Catch your employees doing something right.
It also works for your kids, your spouse, your parents, your friends, etc.
Catch them doing something right.
They will love you for it.
We live to experience an encouraging word, first from our parents, then from our coaches and teachers and then from our bosses. It’s how we grow and thrive.
Think about that inner glow you feel when someone compliments you on a job you’ve done, especially one you are particularly proud of. You can spread that glow with your own employees simply by being genuine and heartfelt with your compliments.
Catch them doing something right.
- Put it on your daily calendar of things to do.
- Set a reminder on your smartphone.
- Schedule it for a different time each day.
- Make it a habit!
Walk around looking for people doing things right. I always found someone.
Always.
You will, too.
Cheers,
Steve
