As a noted expert on looking like a fool, I’m highly qualified to provide this list to you today. It’s inspired by a poster my friend Ken shared on Facebook yesterday that listed the first three.
1. Don’t promise when you’re happy.
2. Don’t email when you’re angry.
3. Don’t decide when you’re sad.
5. Keep your mouth shut. Be a better listener. Think before you speak. Be mindful of not interrupting others. Like Scripture says:
Even a fool, when he holdeth his peace, is counted wise: and he that shutteth his lips is esteemed a man of understanding. -Proverbs 17:28 (KJV)
6. Watch how much you talk about yourself. Focus on the other person.
7. Answer questions as asked.
8. Don’t badmouth people. Look for opportunities to smile, pay compliments and speak nicely of others. This should probably be #1.
9. Don’t hit “Retweet” every time someone mentions you on Twitter.
10. When in doubt, sleep on it. This has helped me many times, and it would have helped countless other times, too.
What about you? As a famously sane, decent, rational human being, what other advice belongs on our list?
Oh, and PS – Last week, I wrote about the 21-Day Happiness Challenge. Several friends and I are starting today. Want to join us?

Tim,
This is soooooooo true. Actually my Mother used to tell me many of those things on your list.
I’ve always learned to take a very long breath when I’ve been mad or upset. And, make it a point NOT to e-mail back immediately if someone has said something I disagree with. I’m not saying this has always been the case… but, for the most part – Yes. I find that after you take a few moments to breathe fresh air, feel the sun on your face and think of all the wonderful things you have in your life… you feel a lot better about yourself and the situation. And that little thing that made you mad a few moments ago? Ha! It becomes so trivial.
Have a Happy April !
Kristi
