Last week, I got an email from a Daily Blur reader who asked:
I am reaching out to you to ask for your recommendations on how to become a better writer. I believe there has to be more than “practice makes perfect”. While I understand the importance of our blog and content being genuine, that doesn't mean I can't be better at writing content. Are there any books, tips, classes, or references you would recommend to help me improve?
Nothing gets me more excited than meeting people who want to improve! I love learning, and I love teaching. Here’s my reply:
I recommend:
- The Wizard Of Ads by Roy H. Williams
- Made To Stick by Chip and Dan Heath
- Influence by Robert Cialdini
- Ogilvy On Advertising by David Ogilvy
- On Writing by Stephen King
- Writing In Restaurants by David Mamet
In addition to our blog, I read the blogs of:
- Jeffrey & Bryan Eisenberg
- Jeff Sexton
- Copyblogger
- Henneke Duistermat
- Joanna Wiebe
- Steven Pressfield's Writing Wednesdays
and I watch Tom Wanek's weekly video.
And because you're the slightly daring type, read this post.
“Oh, you want to be a writer?”
Take care. I hope you find some of this useful!
Tim
PS – Yesterday, my friends at Wizard Academy announced an absurdly cool contest and giveaway of resources for entrepreneurs as good as these listed here. They ask for your email address, and you'll receive a limited number of valuable emails throughout the year. They will NOT share your email address with anyone. Check it out!

Great post, Tim. And I’m honored to have made the blog roll : )
Haven’t read Writing In Restaurants yet, but I’m slowly working my way through Mamets works and will get to that one shortly, I’m sure. So far I’ve liked 3 Uses For a Knife the most. Highly recommended.

Made to Stick is one of my favorite books, and I added the books by Mamet and Williams to my reading wishlist.
Thank you for including my blog, Tim. I’m honored to be in such amazing company.
