Your team was on the bubble… CBS put cameras in the front of the room at your team’s viewing party… and you agonizingly wait… regional by regional… until the final teams are posted… and you’re not among them.
I hated when they upped the number of teams in the Men’s NCAA Basketball tournament from 64 to 68. 64 just felt right to me. They wanted to include just a couple more bubble teams, they said. (It might have had a little bit to do with more money as well.)
On the flip side, I’d like to see them expand the NCAA Football Tournament to eight teams.
No matter how large they expand either tournament, there will always be bubble teams on the outside looking in, and their coaches will always make strong arguments why their bubbles shouldn’t have burst.
If basketball expands to 72 teams, the coach of the 73rd team will complain.
If football expands to 8, the coach of the 9th team will complain.
The simple solution for both coaches? Win more games.
The same is true for your company.
Are you just missing out on sales, contracts, or customers? Is your team not quite performing on all cylinders? Are you worried you’ll just barely miss your Q1 projections?
Get back to basics. Rally your team. Make substitutions. Remember that you improve what you measure and reward. Lead by example. Model the behavior you want to see in your team.
Win more games.
The best way to stop worrying about your bubble bursting is not to blow it in the first place.
