We get asked that question a lot. So, in an unusual move for us, I’m going to share the front of three direct mail piece drafts we did for clients last week. I’ve blurred just a couple things out I’m unwilling to share.
You Get That You Can’t Copy Them, Right?
So, why did I blur out a couple things? Why don’t we show you the backs of these and explain our strategies? Why won’t you find a “Case Studies” section on our website? Why don’t we share more of our own work more often?
For a couple clients, it’s because we’re under non-disclosure agreements, but mostly… it’s because people don’t realize—or, sadly, don’t care—that ideas are property.
Ideas Are Property
You understand that, don’t you? Some people innocently don’t. Some other people maliciously don’t care.
I know it’s crazy, but our ideas and how those ideas manifest themselves are our products. Those ideas have acquired significant value over the years, but because they’re not necessarily tangible, people sometimes feel they can share them or take them from us without permission. (No, you can’t just copy and paste images from Google onto your company website, either.)
How We Feed Our Families
Our successful strategies, concepts, copy, and calls-to-action are how we help to feed our company’s seven families (not to mention the countless families within our clients’ companies).
If you’re interested in hearing about our specific examples, strategies and case studies, consider hiring us. Our first opening is in early 2015. Contact us for more information.
Now, here on The Daily Blur, we’ll happily continue to illustrate the principles and tactics in which we believe, but we’ll mostly do it through the little examples we see in the real world every day.
It’s Really Very Simple
We realize you’re probably not like the heating and air conditioning company owner in the central US who knowingly tried to take the work we did for a client and use it for his business because he thought it was really good.
It was really good. It just wasn’t his any more than one of his service trucks was ours.
Remember, ideas are property… and sometimes that property is extremely valuable. Before you give it away, make sure it’s yours to give.
Incidentally, when it comes to the things we publish on this blog and elsewhere, we have a written permissions policy. Click me to check out what you can and can’t do with our work and words.
