Be patient.
There are many people who don’t believe that. But one of the most important pieces of business advice I ever received came from George Barr who was the radio station General Manager I worked for in Stratford, Ontario. His advice?
Be patient.
I was young and thought I was headed back to big time radio in Toronto. I had arrived in Stratford for what I thought was a year, maybe two. We still live there more than thirty years later.
Whenever another job opportunity came up, I would ask for his advice and he would say:
Be patient.
Over time he taught me why being patient works in your favour.
Many people jump from job to job, never fully learning everything they can from each position. It’s easy to believe the bigger job will fulfill you more, but that’s not always the case. By being patient and learning as much as you can in the position you already have, you’ll be amazed at not only how much you’ll learn but how much respect you’ll earn from the people you know.
They will look at you as a person of influence because you know your job so well. You will be a greater resource, and guess who they will think of when they need something? You.
And as a result more good things will come to you, and you will enjoy advancement far beyond what you earned by bouncing from job to job.
Simply by being patient.
Cheers.
Steve
