James Jeffrey has a fun assignment this week for the Austin Business Journal. He covers the local businesses responsible for Keeping Austin Weird – a slogan that Austinites wear as a badge of pride.
Many of the Austin businesses best known for keeping it weird — such as Amy’s Ice Creams, Chuy’s and ThunderCloud Subs — share a basic business tenet: It’s their people who are the faces of their brand, some of whom have what it takes to start other businesses that perpetuate Austin’s independent spirit.
And so they work to find and cultivate employees who bring a different mindset to what they do.

Who keeps your town weird? Who takes their company culture seriously?
In my town? Shakespeare’s certainly. Sparky’s Ice Cream. Ragtag.
Remember what my partner Roy H. Williams says:
Advertising is a tax you pay for being unremarkable.
These companies are remarkable.
How about your company? What are you doing to be remarkable?
Is it time for a company conversation?
Keep it weird, yo.
