It’s the second time I’ve gotten it from a media rep in the last couple weeks. Am I just grumpy today, or is this off-putting to you, too:
“Would you mind sharing a list of your clients with me?”
Actually, yeah, I guess I kinda do mind.
Is that wrong?
Listen, I respect the work you have to do. I do. I know it’s not easy.
I know I’m not easy. And maybe it’s because you’re the second to ask me, or maybe it’s because of something else that just happened.
Another media rep just called me on at home on a Sunday because “he was having a hard time getting ahold of me during the week.”
How exactly do you think that’s going to help get your foot in the door, dude?
Really, I’m serious. What went through your head?
What’s next? Waiting for my kid after preschool and offering him candy?
Sorry. I am grouchy. Maybe this’ll help.
Yep, it did.

You’re not alone Tim. Seems some folks don’t know what they’re asking.
If I am a mechanic, you cannot borrow my tools.
If I am a musician, you cannot borrow my instrument.
If I am in an occupation where contacts are everything and I make my living by my contacts, NO you CANNOT have my contact list.
…also, with you on the weekend contact nonsense. The office, on the office phone and the office computer is where I do my work. I try to leave at least PART of my life as my own, away from occupational hazards. I’m with you all the way.

THANK YOU for not giving that info out! As a client I am super happy that you chose not to do that. And seriously, who would do that? Thankfully, I am not friends with them.

Could I have your social security number?

On a campling trip once a long time ago, a guy, who was not even a relative, asked to borrow my toothbrush, because he had forgotten to bring his. I said “no thanks.” I know this has nothing to with marketing, but you triggered the memory of something I had forgotten about decades ago.
