Don’t try to fudge it. No matter what, tell the truth with your customers.
We had a recent situation arise at our golf club here in Florida. One of the pro shop staff made up a fanciful story to back up an answer to a policy complaint. Rather than answering that he didn’t know the policy, he tried to fudge it.
Then he compounded the error by trying to embellish his lie. Probably because he was working hard to make sure the guy believed him and his first lie hadn’t sounded convincing enough. He said the finance committee had ruled on this very issue just the day before. It hadn’t. And the guy making the complaint knew that and found the fellow out in a blatant lie.
If you don’t know, say so.
In this world of Google and connectivity, it is too easy to find out the truth.
Not to mention, telling the truth is the right thing to do.
