We could sure use your help today. The boy and I are nearly finished with a project that started last Friday.
His physical therapist – Miss Jennifer – started reinforcing three simple “Be” rules:
1. Be safe.
2. Be kind.
3. Be responsible.
The boy, being an overachiever like his mother, didn’t think these three went far enough. He wanted ten rules for being a big boy.
We’ve spent the last week brainstorming, planning, and sculpting this terrifically important document – which pretty much applies to small business as much as it applies to 5-year-olds. We think, anyway.
Will’s 10 Simple Be Rules For Being A Big Boy:
1. Be safe.
2. Be kind.
3. Be responsible.
4. Be respectful.
5. Be thankful.
6.
7.
8.
9.
10. Be silly … sometimes.
As you can see, we’ve only got nine of the 10. We’re stuck. We need your help:
- Evaluating our current six and suggesting any possible optimizations, and
- Offering up numbers 6-9 (he insisted #10 remain its current iteration).
There you have them. We’d be grateful for any help or suggestions.
Thanks! When it’s finished, I promise to be kind and be respectful and be thankful by sharing it with you as a fancy-and-free pdf. We’ll be designing it for our weekend project.
Will and Daddy
Michele Miller says
Well, if he’s going to take after his dad, it should be:
Be curious. 🙂
Paul Boomer says
Be yourself.
Tim says
M – Good one.
Boomer – Help me out here. I totally get what you’re saying, but persons with autism take things literally. If I write down “Be yourself,” Will’s gonna look at me like I’m from Mars with that ‘who the heck else can I be, daddy’ look. What’s another way to say it?
Jennifer Borisenko says
That’s tough because in PBS the 3 Bees kind of encompass it all – but here are some I thought of: Adventurous, Affectionate, Brave, Cheerful, Enthusiastic, Joyful…..not sure those would all work on a “big boy” level, but Will is a genius!!! : ) See ya Thursday!
Dave Young says
Steve Martin’s old song has loads of bees. Be courteous kind and forgiving, be gentle and peaceful each day….
It’s just when he gets to later verses that it might fall apart for a guy of Will’s age…be obsequious, purple and clairvoyant. hmmm.
Michael Mendelssohn says
Be Honest
Be Faithful
Be Forever Learning
Be Loyal
Be Loving

Dave – thanks for that memory – I haven’t heard that since I listened to it on my brother’s 8-track tape player.
Michael – those are all strong choices. It’s going to be difficult to narrow down to just 10! It’s a shame he’s such a good counter …
Michele Miller says
Dave – great memory. 🙂 But Timmo slammed ya big time, didn’t he? An 8-TRACK PLAYER? Ouch.
Julie Young says
We have it on iTunes
Ryan Patrick says
Be hungry.
Of course, I haven’t had breakfast yet.
Tim says
Thanks, everyone – for your suggestions – both here and on facebook. Will struggled cutting it down to just 10 because there were so many good ones.
