I’m not sure which one you should get. I am sure which one my sister should get, and it might quickly help you, too.
Last night, I had a meeting with my new friends in The Gang of Nerds. They gave away an iPad, and it was a subject of desire and topic of discussion throughout the evening.
I’ve had a dozen people ask me if they should get one, and if so, what size/kind, or if they should wait until the next one?
My wife said I should write up a quick post – in spite of my protestations that there are approximately eight bazillion people who’ve written on the subject. I didn’t exactly write a post/review, but if you’re in the market for one, this might prove useful. If you want more, please let me know.
My sis emails today:
iPad: How much memory should I buy? Do I need 3G if I don’t use AT&T? Thanks!
Please give me an idea what you plan to use it for, and I’ll help you figure out what to get.
Also, they’ll likely refresh to a 2nd generation in April with a camera for facetime/skype chats and general speed improvements if that would interest you.
We will share it at home and on the road as a family for consuming media and playing games, primarily. We plan to aquire the MiFi from Verizon to make it road friendly. That mobile broadband thingy really spoiled me! The chat feature is appealing. I am hoping against hope that Verizon really comes through with the iPhone soon – new promise is February! Thanks!!
Verizon has officially announced the iPhone is coming.
And since you’re going to get the mifi, that really reduces (in fact, pretty well eliminates) the need for a 3G version of the iPad.
My recommendation would be the 32gig WiFi. Media eats it up pretty quickly. If you have a netflix account (or would be willing to spend eight bucks a month for unlimited downloads) you can stream a ton of movies and tv shows as well. But we can get into apps at a later date. : )
I would also strongly recommend the simple Apple case (thin, light, works as a prop-up stand) and a bluetooth keyboard for typing. A couple quick sentences on the on-screen keyboard is fine, but if you want to write or blog or answer several emails, you’ll appreciate the extra keyboard.
And … if you’re looking for the most perfect bag in the world to take it on the trip … this is one of my favorite companies in the world.

Hope that helps. Hope it’s not too much!
Perfect…just like you!
So, there, it’s not very long, but it’s a sufficient answer for her needs, and I didn’t need 1500 words to convince her. If you want more information, please let me know, I’m happy to further spread my nerd wings. And while you’re thinking about Apple, can I close by saying you should check out Michael Hyatt’s review of the MacBook Air. I agree with everything he says. It’s the best computer I’ve ever had the pleasure of using.
